Over time, most blogs may go through many changes, like posts being added or deleted. In some occasions, you don't want people to get 404 messages when they surf to posts or pages that don't exist on your blog and instead, make all requests to a specific link to be redirected to another page. One of the best way to avoid broken links and keep your traffic flowing in the right direction is setting custom redirects via the Blogger Custom Redirects tool.

In this post, we will see how to set custom redirects for Blogger posts and redirect an old URL to a new URL. But before redirecting any URL, you must know that there are two types of redirects:

A 302 redirect means that the page has moved temporarily. This redirect doesn't pass the URL value to the new location and instead, it will take the visitors to an appropriate location so that you aren't showing them a 404 page not found, or an error page. You can use a 302 redirect for coming soon pages or maintenance pages.

A 301 redirect means that a page has moved permanently to a new location. Use the 301 redirect when you deleted or changed the URL of your post. In most instances, the 301 redirects are always recommended for SEO because they will pass link juice (ranking power) to the redirected page and visitors will also benefit from this. However, 301s aren't suitable when you change your custom-domain, because it only supports redirection within the same blog, not to an external URL.

Now that we've established which is which, let's see how to set custom redirects for Blogger posts.

How to redirect old URL to new URL in Blogger

Step 1. Login to you Blogger account with email and password.

Step 2. Click on your blog > go to Settings \ Search Preferences and click "Edit" next to "Custom Redirects."

search preferences, custom redirects, 301, 302 redirect

Step 3. Enter the old URL in the "From" field, and the new URL in the "To" field including the forward slash "/" (see the screenshot below)

custom redirects, redirect old url to new url

Note: Do not enter the full URL in these fields. Just omit the address of your blog and type only the rest of the link. Again, this works only if you wish to redirect within your blogger blog and not to any external links.

Step 4. Click the "Save" link (1) and the "Save changes" button (2), and you're done!

If you want to redirect more pages, just click the "New redirect" button.
Here's another amazing way to display our Blogger posts. By applying the following Responsive CSS Timeline View with 3D Effect on Blogger Posts, we will have a responsive timeline-like structure of the most recent posts and their thumbnails, along with some cool CSS effects. When clicking on the associated radio input, the posts snippet/summary will expand by changing their style and size and will rotate in 3D. The main structure of this CSS timeline with 3D effect is an unordered list.

</b:if>

Step 5. Search for the SECOND instance of this code below (hit Enter two times):
<data:post.body/>

Note: depending on the template you are using, you could find more lines like this one above. Therefore, if you don't see any changes after saving the template, try to replace the last one, as well.

Also, please note that if you are using the Read more function, you may need to remove it in order to make it work.

Step 6. After you found <data:post.body/> - replace it this code:
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != &quot;static_page&quot;'>
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != &quot;item&quot;'>
<ul class='timeline'><li class='event'><input checked='checked' name='tl-group' type='radio'/><label/>

<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;item&quot;'><data:post.body/></b:if>
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;static_page&quot;'><data:post.body/></b:if>
Step 7. Finally, click on the Save template button to save the changes.

Now, we will need to make some small adjustments in order to make the posts date appear correctly:
Go to Layout and click on the Edit link just below the Blog posts area. When the pop-up window appears, check the date option and choose to display the date in the following order (date/month/year):

Note that you can also hide the posts date by unchecking this option.
Finally, click on the Save button and that's it! View your blog and enjoy this Responsive Timeline view with 3D Effect on Blogger posts. If you need more help, please leave a comment below.

When your blog has too many posts, visitors don't always have the time or desire to go through all the posts written there in order to make an idea of the blog's content. Thus, a random posts widget that will allow visitors to find content more easily could be really useful. This tutorial will show you how to add a random posts widget to display a list of posts in a random order with thumbnails and excerpts.

The magazine or newspaper style templates are those that display the posts summaries in the homepage by stacking the columns on top of each other. This kind of templates is very popular nowadays, and whether it is a news or technology blog, everyone needs a fresh magazine style layout for their blogs.

blogger tricks, blogger widgets, blogger templates
There are several ways to make posts appear this way. An option would be to use the Read more script to display a summary of the posts and add a conditional tag and a different style to the first post so that it will have a larger width than the older posts. So, this tutorial will show you how to create a magazine style for a Blogger Template. By following this tutorial, you can transform your boring and simple Blogger template to have an attractive and stylish magazine style layout.

To see how it looks like, please visit this demo blog.

Adding the Magazine/Newspaper style to a Blogger Template

Step 1. Before anything please make a backup of your current template to make sure that you won't lose anything important - just log in on your Blogger Dashboard and go to Template, then click on the Backup/Restore button. After you've got a copy of the xml template, click on the Edit HTML button:

blogger edit html template

Step 2. Click anywhere inside the code area and search by using CTRL + F keys for this line:
<data:post.body/>
Note: You'll find it more than once, but stop to the second one in order to see the changes.

Step 3. Remove that line and instead it add this code:
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != &quot;item&quot;'>
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != &quot;static_page&quot;'>
 <span class='post-comment-link'><b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != &quot;item&quot;'><b:if cond='data:post.allowComments'><a class='comment-link' expr:href='data:post.addCommentUrl' expr:onclick='data:post.addCommentOnclick'><data:post.numComments/></a></b:if></b:if></span>
<div expr:id='&quot;summary&quot; + data:post.id'><data:post.body/></div>
  <script type='text/javascript'>createSummaryAndThumb(&quot;summary<data:post.id/>&quot;);</script>
<span class='readmorebutton' style='float:right'><a expr:href='data:post.url'>Read More &#187;</a></span></b:if></b:if>
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;item&quot;'><data:post.body/></b:if>
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;static_page&quot;'><data:post.body/></b:if>
Note: you can replace the Read More text, by changing the code in red

Step 4. Now find (CTRL + F) this line:
<b:include data='post' name='post'/>
Step 5. Remove this as well and instead of it add this:
<b:if cond='data:post.isFirstPost'>
<b:if cond='data:blog.homepageUrl == data:blog.url'>
<div id='first'>
<b:if cond='data:post.title'>
<h3 class='post-title entry-title'>

<b:else/>
<b:if cond='data:post.url'>

<b:else/>
<data:post.title/>
</b:if>
</b:if>
</h3>
</b:if>
<div class='first-body'>

<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != &quot;item&quot;'>
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != &quot;static_page&quot;'>
<div expr:id='&quot;summary1&quot; + data:post.id'><data:post.body/></div>
  <script type='text/javascript'>createSummaryAndThumb1(&quot;summary1<data:post.id/>&quot;);</script>
<span class='post-comment-link'><b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != &quot;item&quot;'><b:if cond='data:post.allowComments'><a class='comment-link' expr:href='data:post.addCommentUrl' expr:onclick='data:post.addCommentOnclick'><data:post.numComments/></a></b:if></b:if></span>
<span class='readmorebutton' style='float:right'><a expr:href='data:post.url'>Read More &#187;</a></span>
</b:if></b:if>
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;item&quot;'><data:post.body/></b:if>
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;static_page&quot;'><data:post.body/></b:if>

</div>
</div>
<b:else/>
<b:include data='post' name='post'/>
</b:if>
<b:else/>
<b:include data='post' name='post'/>
</b:if>
Note: you can change the Read More text here also, just replace the code in red with the text that you want to show.

Step 6. Now find the </head> tag and paste the following script before/above it:
 <script type='text/javascript'>
posts_no_thumb_sum = 290;
posts_thumb_sum = 240;
img_thumb_height = 80;
img_thumb_width = 80;
first_no_thumb_sum = 580;
first_thumb_sum = 450;
img_thumb_height1 = 145;
img_thumb_width1 = 165;

</script>

<script type='text/javascript'>
//<![CDATA[
function removeHtmlTag(strx,chop){
if(strx.indexOf("<")!=-1)
{
var s = strx.split("<");
for(var i=0;i<s.length;i++){
if(s[i].indexOf(">")!=-1){
s[i] = s[i].substring(s[i].indexOf(">")+1,s[i].length);
}
}
strx = s.join("");
}
chop = (chop < strx.length-1) ? chop : strx.length-2;
while(strx.charAt(chop-1)!=' ' && strx.indexOf(' ',chop)!=-1) chop++;
strx = strx.substring(0,chop-1);
return strx+'...';
}

function createSummaryAndThumb(pID){
var div = document.getElementById(pID);
var imgtag = "";
var img = div.getElementsByTagName("img");
var summ = posts_no_thumb_sum;
if(img.length>=1) {
imgtag = '<span class="posts-thumb" style="float:left;"><img src="'+img[0].src+'" width="'+img_thumb_width+'px" height="'+img_thumb_height+'px"/></span>';
summ = posts_thumb_sum;
}

  var summary = imgtag + '<div class="summary">' + removeHtmlTag(div.innerHTML,summ) + '</div>';
div.innerHTML = summary;
}

function createSummaryAndThumb1(pID){
var div = document.getElementById(pID);
var imgtag = "";
var img = div.getElementsByTagName("img");
var summ = first_no_thumb_sum;
if(img.length>=1) {
imgtag = '<span class="first-post-thumb" style="float:left;"><img src="'+img[0].src+'" width="'+img_thumb_width1+'px" height="'+img_thumb_height1+'px"/></span>';
summ = first_thumb_sum;
}

var summary1 = imgtag + '<div class="summary">' + removeHtmlTag(div.innerHTML,summ) + '</div>';
div.innerHTML = summary1;
}

//]]>
</script>
Step 7. And below the script above add these CSS styles:
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != &quot;static_page&quot;'>
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != &quot;item&quot;'>

    font-weight: bold;
}

#blog-pager {
    clear: both;
}
</style>
</b:if>
</b:if>
Customization:

1) At the beginning of the script from step 6, we have this section:
posts_no_thumb_sum = 290;
posts_thumb_sum = 240;
img_thumb_height = 80;
img_thumb_width = 80;
first_no_thumb_sum = 580;
first_thumb_sum = 450;
img_thumb_height1 = 145;
img_thumb_width1 = 165;
- the first number is the number of characters that will show for the small posts when there will be no image available
- the 2nd number is the number of characters that will show when the small posts will have an image
- the 3rd and the 4th line is for the height and width of the small posts thumbnails (images).
- the same goes for what is in blue, but this configuration affects only the first post. Since the first post is wider, it may contain a larger number of characters and we'll be able to make the thumbnail size larger.

2) And finally, we have the CSS styles. That last thing we added is a code that determines how the posts are going to look on the homepage (and archive pages as well, except for the first post).

To change the width an height, respectively the size for the first post container, look for these lines:
width: auto;
height: 250px;
Underneath the first post are the values for the other posts, just look for this part:
width: 46%;
height: 230px;
The width will ocuppy 46% of the main column width and height is set to 230px. Here you may need to experiment a bit with the sizes in order to make them appear correctly.

Finally, set the number of posts to show on the homepage, so that there won't be any empty space. Go to Settings >> Posts and comments >> Show at most and select the number of posts that you want to appear.
One of the limitations of a blog is that it doesn't have an index or sitemap of the site that could make it easier for readers to find content that they are searching for.
While the blog archive and labels have all the information about the published post, these do not appear on a single page completely, so searching for more posts is not always easy.

Luckily, this gadget will help you to add a table of contents or sitemap on Blogger showing the index of all posts separated by categories that have been published. It will also show the latest posts with a text saying New!

After adding the above code, replace http://helplogger.blogspot.com with the address of your blog.

Customization:

- to change the color and font size of categories title, replace the values in red
- to change the color of the links, replace the value in green

Step 4. Click Options on the right side and select Don't allow (hide existing) for the reader's comments

Step 5. Finally, click the Publish button and View the page.

That's all!
The index of the posts is sorted alphabetically and is updated automatically each time a new post is published.
This Javascript code will display the latest posts of any feed with the distinction of having two parts that can be used individually or combined. At the top this widget will show a single post along with the title (link), author, date and a brief summary of its content. In addition, this post will rotate automatically within a list whose number of elements will be decided by us. At the bottom, we'll find a full list with chosen posts that will change the post above when we mouse over them, thus breaking the automatic cycle.

<script src="http://www.google.com/jsapi" type="text/javascript"></script><script src="http://www.google.com/uds/solutions/dynamicfeed/gfdynamicfeedcontrol.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
function showGadget() {var feeds = [{title:'List',url:'http://helplogger.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=10'},];
new GFdynamicFeedControl(feeds, 'feedGadget',{title: 'Latest Posts', numResults : 10, displayTime : 5000, hoverTime : 500});} google.load("feeds", "1");
google.setOnLoadCallback(showGadget);
</script>
<div id="feedGadget">Loading...</div>

Customizations:

The url in blue is the feed address. Obviously, the http://helplogger.blogspot.com address should be replaced with yours.

Next is start-index=1. This number indicates which post will appear first on the list. By default it is the latest post published on our blog, so if we want to begin displaying older posts, we need to change the 1 value.

max-results=10 indicates the maximum number of posts that we will be reading from the feed, beginning from the one that we have set up before in the start-index=1. This number always needs to be equal or greater to what we should see later and its purpose is to set the number of posts that will be shown in the gadget. The easy thing would be to put 500 in order not to fail, but the higher the number is, the longer the gadget will take to load, so it's better to adjust to what we need to show.

Finally here are some other parameters of the script:

title: 'Latest Posts', is the widget's title that appears on top.
numResults: 10, number of posts that will show in the list
displayTime: 5000, the delay time between posts in the rotator (in milliseconds)
hoverTime: 500, minimum time for an item in the list to be displayed at the top.

If you want to hide the list and show only the posts, then change this part:
.gfg-list {
position : relative;
overflow : hidden;
text-align : left;
}
 to :
.gfg-list {
display:none;
}
and if you want to display only the list, then change this part:
.gfg-entry {
background-color: #FFFFFF;
width : 100%;
height : 9.2em;
position : relative;
overflow : hidden;
text-align : left;
margin-top : 3px;
}
to:
.gfg-entry {
display: none; }

Step 4. Save the gadget and you're done. Enjoy!
Blogger allows us to easily add a "Popular Posts" widget, that we select from its list of gadgets, and we can do that by going to the "Layout" of our Blog.

This gadget, as the name implies, shows which are the most visited blog posts, and you can set it to display the info you want in four possible combinations: (1) only the title of the post, (2) a thumbnail of the image and the post title, (3) post title with a summary, and (4) post title with a thumbnail and a post snippet.

This is an element that you shouldn't miss in your blog because it encourages your visitors to navigate through your content and that can result in higher income if you're monetizing your blog because it would generate an increase in the number of pages visited, and in turn, can attract the users' interest to subscribe to the blog and to read interesting content.

Preliminary steps: Add the gadget, if you haven't done it yet.

1. Select the "Layout" tab and add the "Popular Posts" gadget in that part of your blog you want to appear, such as in your sidebar, by clicking on "Add a Gadget".

2. Configure the widget to show only the post titles. You can do this by clicking on the "image thumbnail" and "snippet" checkboxes, as shown in the following image.

3. After configuring the widget, save the changes by clicking on Save, and then Save arrangement.

How to add the CSS to create the style of the Popular Posts widget

1. Choose a style, then copy the CSS that appears below the image that shows the style.

2. Select the "Template" tab, then click on Customize > Advanced > Add CSS and then paste the CSS style that you like the most.

3. Once you add the CSS, Save changes by clicking on the "Apply to Blog" button.

Note: Some Blogger templates might not allow adding CSS in that location. In that case, for adding the CSS style you need to access the Template's HTML - from your Blogger Dashboard, go to Template > Edit HTML and paste the code just above the ]]></b:skin> tag (press the CTRL + F keys to find it - you might need to click on the arrow to expand the code and after that search it again)

And that's it! You've already customized the popular posts widget when it shows only post titles.

Styles

Here is the CSS of each style, just choose the one you like the best and put it on your blog. You can see each of these styles in action in the following demo blog:

Final Notes

All the CSS is valid. I just have to mention that the numbering is not visible in Internet Explorer 7, since that version of the browser does not support properties that make the numbers appear. For example in the 4th style, the circles look squared in IE8 and earlier versions since, these versions do not support a property that makes them look as circles.
Here's another way to customize your Blog. In this case, your Posts and Comment's first letter. The effect is a large first letter stretching down three or four lines with the text wrapped around. The drop cap letter can also use a different font and have a different color from the rest of the text. This style can be often seen in newspapers, literature, magazines. So, in this tutorial I will show you how to apply automatically a Magazine text style on Blogger Posts and Comments. Let's start adding it...

Big First Letter for your Blogger / Blogspot Posts

Step 1. From your Blogger Dashboard, go to Template and click on the Edit HTML button:

Step 2. Click anywhere inside the code area and press the CTRL + F keys to open the Blogger' search box. Type this piece of code inside the search box then hit Enter to find it:
]]></b:skin>
Note: you might need to click on the arrow next to it to expand the code within and then you need to search ]]></b:skin> one more time.

Step 3. Just above ]]></b:skin>, add the following CSS code:
.capital:first-letter {
float: left;
display: block;
font-family: Times, serif, Georgia;
font-size: 40px;
color: #000000;
margin:0px 5px 0 0;
padding:0 0 0 10px;
}
Color - change the value in blue with the hex of your color
Size - to change the letter size, increase/decrease the value highlighted in pink.

Step 4. Now search for this code:
<data:post.body/>
Step 5. Then immediately before and after add the red fragments you see in the example below:
 <div class='capital'><data:post.body/></div>
Step 6. Save the changes by clicking on the Save template button.

Important! If the above code is not working, add one of following codes from this example:
<p class="capital"><data:post.body/></p>
Or try this instead:
<span class="capital"><data:post.body/></span>

Big First Letter For Blogger/Blogspot Comments

Step 1. Log in to your Blogger account > go to Template > Edit HTML > click anywhere inside the code area and press CTRL + F keys to open the search box

Step 2. Type the following piece of code inside the search box and hit Enter to find it (if you have already added this code, skip step 2 & 3):
]]></b:skin>
Step 3. Add the following code just above ]]></b:skin>:
.capital:first-letter {
float: left;
display: block;
font-family: Times, serif, Georgia;
font-size: 40px;
color: #000000;
margin:0px 5px 0 0;
padding:0 0 0 10px;
}
Color - to change the letter color, replace the value in blue with the value of your color. Here's a tool that might help you to find the hex of the color that you need: Color Code Generator
Size - to change the letter size, change the value in pink.

Step 4. Then Search for this piece of code:
<data:comment.body/>
Step 5. Add the red codes before and after <data:comment.body/> as you can see in my example below:
<p class="capital"><data:comment.body/></p>
Step 6. Save your Template.

That's it! Now you have a cool drop cap first letter on your blog. If you have any question, leave a comment below!
